Irbid, July 22 (Petra) — The Ophthalmology Department at Princess
Basma Teaching Hospital has successfully performed its first Ahmed
glaucoma valve implantation surgery, marking a milestone for the
facility.

Dr. Nisreen Makhadmeh, head of the hospital’s ophthalmology
department, said the procedure represents a major shift in the
quality of care provided to patients. She noted that patients
suffering from complex eye conditions previously had to be
transferred to other hospitals for the specialized treatment.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Murad Al-Zoubi explained that the surgery was
performed on a patient suffering from severe, refractory high
intraocular pressure that had failed to respond to medications and
laser treatments. The patient also had severe adhesions in the eye’s
drainage angle resulting from diabetic retinopathy. The valve was
implanted to preserve the patient’s vision despite the complexity of
the case.

Dr. Waleed Al-Halabi, director of Princess Basma Hospital,
highlighted that the achievement was the result of collaborative
teamwork among ophthalmologists, anesthesiologists, nursing staff,
technicians, and administrators dedicated to patient safety and
quality care.
