National
Team for Economic Complexity Index Holds Its First Meeting

Muscat,
14 Sep 2026 (ONA) — During its first meeting in 2026, the National Team for the
Project to Improve the Sultanate of Oman’s Performance in the Economic Complexity
Index discussed the concept of economic complexity and its importance in
measuring the diversity and sophistication of the economy’s productive and
knowledge capabilities, as well as its role in supporting the transition toward
high-value-added economic activities and sectors.

The
meeting was chaired by Dr. Nasser Rashid Al Maawali, Undersecretary of the
Ministry of Economy and Head of the Team, in the presence of representatives of
government entities,

The
meeting reviewed the team’s annual plan and operational plan, along with the
proposed priorities and initiatives to improve the Sultanate of Oman’s
performance in the index during the coming phase, within the framework of
national efforts aimed at enhancing economic diversification, developing the
competitive ecosystem of the national economy, and improving the Sultanate of
Oman’s performance in relevant international indices.

It
addressed a number of pillars related to developing the productive and export
base of the national economy, enhancing exports with knowledge and
technological content, and leveraging national potential and capabilities to
expand into more diverse and complex products, thereby contributing to raising
the added value of Omani exports and enhancing their competitiveness in
regional and international markets.

The
meeting emphasized the importance of integrating roles among member government
entities, as well as strengthening coordination in implementing initiatives and
following up on data and indicators associated with economic complexity, to
ensure the unification of national efforts and directing them toward priorities
with a direct impact on the Sultanate of Oman’s performance in the index.

It
also discussed the importance of enhancing communication and coordination with
international organizations and entities responsible for preparing and
publishing international indices and reports, as well as following up on the
methodologies and data used in assessing countries’ performance, which
contributes to ensuring the accuracy of data pertaining to the Sultanate of
Oman and boosting its presence in international indices related to economic
competitiveness.

The
team’s work comes within efforts aimed at developing the competitive ecosystem
of the national economy and linking national initiatives with international
indices, thereby supporting economic policymaking and helping identify
opportunities for improvement and developing productive and export
capabilities, in alignment with the targets of economic diversification and
Oman Vision 2040.

The
Economic Complexity Index is one of the international indicators that measure
the diversity and sophistication of economies’ productive capabilities, based
on the nature of the products they manufacture and export, and the accumulated
knowledge, skills, and capabilities these products require.

The
index provides a reading of the level of development of an economy’s productive
structure and its capacity to transition toward producing and exporting more diverse,
complex, and value-added products, reflecting the level of knowledge and
productive capabilities available in the national economy.
