Amman, July 22 (Petra) – The Land Transport Regulatory Commission
(LTRC) has signed operating contracts with service providers for the
Irbid–Zarqa and Irbid–Jerash routes under the second phase of the
kingdom’s regular public transport project, as it continues efforts
to modernize public transport services in Irbid Governorate, head of
LTRC’s Irbid office, Mohammad Alalawneh, said on Wednesday.

Alalawneh told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the commission
will begin next week installing electronic fare payment systems,
Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking devices and smart cameras on
all vehicles operating on the two routes, in preparation for the
pilot launch of the service. The measures are aimed at ensuring high
standards of quality and efficiency in public transport operations.

He said the electronic payment system would simplify fare collection,
enhance transparency and provide accurate data to support further
improvements to the service. GPS tracking would enable authorities to
monitor schedule adherence and the regularity of trips, helping
ensure timely departures and arrivals and improving service quality
for passengers, while smart cameras would enhance safety and security
aboard the vehicles.

Alalawneh added that passengers would also have access to onboard
wireless internet (Wi-Fi), a step intended to improve the public
transport experience and align services with international best
practices through the adoption of modern technology.

He said the inclusion of the Irbid–Zarqa and Irbid–Jerash routes in
the regular public transport project marks a significant improvement
in inter-governorate transport services by providing passengers with
a more reliable and predictable means of travel through fixed
schedules, while enhancing comfort and safety. The initiative is
expected to encourage greater use of public transport and reduce
reliance on private vehicles.

Alalawneh said Irbid Governorate is witnessing rapid development in
the public transport sector as a result of efforts by the Land
Transport Regulatory Commission, in cooperation with various
partners, to implement projects aimed at modernizing the vehicle
fleet, expanding the regular transport network, and introducing smart
systems to improve service quality and operational efficiency.

He said the commission is implementing a comprehensive plan to
upgrade public transport services across the governorate in line with
government directives to establish a modern, safe and sustainable
transport system capable of meeting citizens’ needs while supporting
economic and social development.

Alalawneh said additional development projects are planned during the
next phase, further strengthening Irbid’s position as a leading model
for public transport development in Jordan. He added that the
commission would continue working to improve service quality, raise
customer satisfaction and provide transport services that keep pace
with the latest developments in the sector.
