Dar Es Salaam, October 09 (QNA) – The Shura Council concluded its participation today in the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the 218th Governing Council, and related meetings in Arusha, the United Republic of Tanzania. The event brought together parliamentary speakers and delegations from around the world.
The Shura Council delegation was led by HE Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, Deputy Speaker of the Council and Vice-President of the IPU Executive Committee, representing the Arab Group in the Committee.
The delegation participated in the Assembly’s meetings, which included discussions on the session’s theme— “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all” —as well as deliberations on a range of parliamentary and international issues. Particular attention was given to inclusive social development and the empowerment and promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities.
The Shura Council, represented by HE Eng. Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi, participated in a conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network.
At the close of the session, HE Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives Milton Dick was elected IPU President for the 2026–2029 term, succeeding HE Dr. Tulia Ackson.
The Assembly concluded with the adoption of the “Arusha Declaration,” which underscored the importance of strengthening good governance, upholding transparency and accountability, expanding community participation in decision-making, and building trust between communities and public institutions. It also called for the empowerment of women, youth, and persons with disabilities; the responsible use of modern technologies and artificial intelligence; and stronger parliamentary cooperation to address shared challenges.
The Assembly’s closing session followed meetings of the Governing Council, which considered ways to strengthen the role of parliaments in promoting good governance, advancing sustainable development, and addressing shared challenges. (QNA)
