Council of Church Heads thanks King, government for approving amendments to Christian Denomination Councils Law

Amman, October 11 (Petra) – The Council of Church Heads in Jordan
expressed gratitude to His Majesty King Abdullah II, Prime Minister
Jafar Hassan and the Cabinet for their responsiveness to the
Council’s requests to amend the 2014 Law on Christian Denomination
Councils.

In a statement issued Sunday, the Council praised the Cabinet’s
approval of the 2026 draft law amending the legislation governing
Christian denomination councils and its referral to the National
Assembly for completion of the constitutional procedures.

The Council described the move as a significant national step
reflecting the Jordanian state’s commitment, under the Hashemite
leadership, to safeguarding the rights of Jordanians, respecting
their religious specificities and upholding the principles of
citizenship, justice and equality within a state governed by the rule
of law and institutions.

The Council stressed that Christians in Jordan are not separate from
the country’s social fabric but are an integral part of its history,
identity and national journey. They are members of its tribes and
families and partners in building the nation, advancing its
development and protecting its achievements.

It added that Jordanian citizenship provides the common foundation
for equal rights and duties, reinforcing national unity and peaceful
coexistence.

The Council commended the spirit of cooperation and consensus among
Christian churches during the preparation of the proposed amendments,
which resulted in a unified draft law agreed upon by the churches.

The proposed amendments address wills, inheritance and adoption, with
the aim of meeting the needs and aspirations of Christian communities
and promoting greater stability and reassurance in family matters.

The statement expressed confidence that the Parliament, comprising
the Senate and the House of Representatives, would fulfill its
national and legislative responsibilities by approving the draft law
in accordance with constitutional procedures, paving the way for its
entry into force.

The Council thanked all those who contributed to the initiative,
including official, ecclesiastical and legal bodies, as well as
everyone who worked to achieve consensus, noting that the outcome
reflected joint efforts and constructive dialogue.

Concluding the statement, the Council prayed for Jordan’s continued
security and stability, for the protection of His Majesty King
Abdullah II and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin
Abdullah II and for the success of all state institutions in serving
the interests of the nation and its people.
