Manila, June 08 (QNA) – A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the southern coast of the Philippines Monday.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 km off the coast of Mindanao Island, the US Geological Survey reported.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWS) issued a statement indicating the possibility of tsunami waves within the next three hours along the coasts of the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea.
The statement noted that waves could reach heights of 1-3 meters above the tide level along the Philippine coast, and 0.3-1 meter along the coasts of Indonesia and Malaysia.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency also issued a tsunami warning for its Pacific coast, from the northern islands of Okinawa to east of Tokyo.
The Philippines experiences increased volcanic and seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates meet. (QNA)
