Baptism Site, July 29 (Petra) – The Baptism Site of Jesus Christ,
known as Al-Maghtas, remains a “foundational” pillar of global
Christian heritage and religious tourism, Senate Tourism and Heritage
Committee Chair Michel Nazzal stated on Wednesday.

Nazzal, in remarks to “Petra,” said 2030 will mark 2,000 years since
the baptism of Jesus Christ.

He stated “all” historical and archaeological evidence confirms the
location within Jordanian territory, establishing it as the
birthplace of Christianity and a primary destination for global
Christian pilgrimage.

While sites west of the river mark Christ’s birth, Nazzal said,
Al-Maghtas signifies the start of His ministry.

He noted His Majesty King Abdullah II “prioritized” developing the
land adjacent to Al-Maghtas site to enhance services while preserving
its sanctity.

He added that early Christian sites and churches, among the oldest in
the world, span across Jordan, including locations in Madaba, Aqaba,
Petra, and Mafraq.

Calling on global clergy to organize pilgrimages to the site, Nazzal
said Jordan’s stewardship of these holy places showcases its
historical legacy and ongoing role in promoting interfaith dialogue
and peace.

The Baptism Site Commission’s Director General Abdullah Bawareed
detailed several recent site enhancements completed alongside the
Department of Antiquities.

Upgrades cover renovated northern and southern overlooks, historical
trails, accessible pathways for visitors with disabilities, and new
educational signage. The site has also added upgraded visitor service
units, a designated Christian cemetery, and on-site Civil Defense
emergency medical services to accommodate growing visitor numbers.
