Amman, Oct 12 (Petra) – The Ministry of Foreign and Expatriate
Affairs welcomed the unanimous adoption by the Executive Board of the
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) of a resolution on the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls,
under the agenda item, titled “Occupied Palestine”, during its 225th
session held on Monday in Paris.
The Ministry’s official spokesperson Fuad Majali noted that the
resolution adopted today reiterated a demand for Israel, the
occupying power, to halt all unilateral, illegitimate, and unlawful
measures in the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, which target the
exceptional cultural and historical value of Jerusalem, jeopardize
the city’s cultural heritage, and are deemed null and void.
He said the resolution deplored the Israeli occupation authorities’
failure to comply with demands to stop ongoing excavations,
tunneling, and works of a cable car and other projects in East
Jerusalem, all of which are considered illegal, and reiterated the
demand for Israel to cease all violations.
Majali said the resolution reaffirms Jordan’s unwavering position on
the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, including Islamic and
Christian holy sites, and maintaining the historical and legal status
quo therein.
It also reaffirms previous resolutions issued by the Executive Board
and the World Heritage Committee on Jerusalem, he added.
