Ramtha, July 9 (Petra) — A multidisciplinary epilepsy surgery team
at King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH) on Thursday successfully
performed an “advanced” procedure to remove an epileptic focus in a
30-year-old woman patient suffering from drug-resistant epilepsy
using awake craniotomy.

According to a hospital statement, preoperative neurological
assessment led by neurologist and epilepsy specialist Ahmed Yassin
featured advanced tests, such as magnetic resonance imaging,
long-term video electroencephalography monitoring, functional brain
imaging and positron emission tomography (PET).

The tests precisely identified the epileptic focus in the left
frontal lobe near the language area, confirming the patient’s
suitability for surgical treatment.

Neurosurgeon and epilepsy surgery specialist Dr. Amer Jaradat
performed the procedure, using the awake craniotomy technique.

Awake craniotomy is among the most advanced neurosurgical procedures,
allowing surgeons to achieve a balance between removing the source of
seizures and preserving vital neurological functions, particularly
when the affected area is close to language or motor centers.

The technique increases the chances of controlling seizures while
maintaining patients’ quality of life, the statement said.
