Amman, Aug 4 (Petra) – Jordan will be hit by a heat wave of several days, starting Friday, with temperatures reaching over 40 degrees Celsius, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said Monday.

Such heatwaves are normal at this time of year, especially in August, the hottest month of the year, according to Jordan climate records, JMD Director Raed Al Khattab said.

He expected Amman temperatures to soar between 39 to 41 degrees celsius, depending on region, and could exceed the forties in the Jordan Valley, Badia, and Aqaba.

This wave is attributed to a “rush of air mass” from the Arabian Peninsula, a common phenomenon during the months of July and August, with the effect of the seasonal heat depression, he said.

According to climate records, the highest temperature recorded in Amman was 43.7 C on August 13, 2023 in a 13-day heatwave.

Al Khattab advised the public during such heatwaves to avoid direct exposure to the sun, especially in the peak hours (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), drink plenty of water and fluids to stay hydrated, avoid caffeinated beverages, wear light, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing, use protective hats when going out, and not leave children or the elderly inside closed vehicles, even for short periods.
