Ramallah, July 08 (QNA) – Chairman of the Palestinian National Council (PNC) Rawhi Fattouh said he was pretty upbeat about the Irish Parliament’s move to sanction a bill that bans the importation of products manufactured by Israeli colonies established in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.
This step is by far an advanced legal and moral shift that is in line with the international rules-based order and represents a practical position in confronting the unlawful settlement colonization system, Fattouh said in a statement on Wednesday.
He added that the Irish decision unequivocally translates the 2024 advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the unlawful Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.
Fattouh remarked that this opinion stressed that it behooves states to live up to their obligations by never recognizing the unlawful status arising from this occupation and by never providing any kind of support that perpetuates this occupation.
He thanked Ireland and Spain, as well as all nations that have taken or are poised to take legal and economic measures against settlement colonization, describing them as responsible moves that strengthen international law, put an end to annexation policies, and halt the systematic plundering of Palestinian resources.
As such, Fattouh called on the international community and European Union countries to turn their political stances into binding measures that include banning settlement products and imposing sanctions on the colonial settlement system, alongside its leaders, and to hold the occupying state accountable for acts of terrorism and racism being perpetrated by settler gangs.
He likewise called for holding them accountable for their grave violations of international law and the resolutions of international legitimacy, thereby contributing to ending the occupation and enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination and establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
