Amman, Feb. 12 (Petra) – Agriculture Minister Khaled Hneifat said the rangeland strategy approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday is a key national and global initiative, given the sector’s role in reducing livestock feed costs and enhancing ecosystem services.

Speaking to the Jordan News Agency (Petra), Hneifat said sustainable rangeland management helps preserve biodiversity, prevent soil erosion, improve water catchment efficiency, and protect plant and animal species. These efforts, he added, contribute to mitigating the effects of climate change and increasing fodder production.

The ministry, in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and other stakeholders, has updated the rangeland strategy for 2024-2030 to address emerging challenges. The revised strategy focuses on governance, knowledge management, and community-led approaches, while also incorporating the al-Hima concept one of the oldest traditional conservation methods for protecting natural resources.

Hneifat noted that the strategy’s proposed projects align with national plans for biodiversity conservation, desertification control, land degradation, and climate change adaptation.
