Amman, Feb 11 (Petra) — The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in cooperation with the Public Security Department (PSD), Tuesday held a dialogue session on overcrowding in correctional and rehabilitation centers in Jordan.

PSD Director General Major General Obaidallah Maaytah spoke of the importance of the meeting to look into effective solutions to the problem of overcrowding to help improve “the incarceration environment, taking into account best international practices of human rights standards, which Jordan seeks to implement as part of the correctional approach, in adherence to human rights and the respect of human dignity.”

The PSD has endeavored to develop its “philosophy of correction and rehabilitation through programs to provide a humane environment for inmates to change their behavior and integrate into society as productive individuals.”

“Overcrowding is a global challenge that requires innovative legal and administrative procedures and cooperation between all concerned bodies to maintain health, security and social care standards at correctional centers and overcome challenges facing penal institutions in many countries around the world.” he said

Department of Correctional and Rehabilitation Centers, Brigadier Falah Al-Majali, said today’s session is a product of an effective partnership and a true belief among all those concerned in the criminal justice system in Jordan in the importance of coming up with effective recommendations to enhance the state of societal peace and serve justice and humanity alike.

Sarah Avrillaud, ICRC Head of Delegation, commended Jordan’s efforts to protect human rights and provide a safe environment in detention centers, noting the PSD’s efforts to improve services to inmates and find solutions to overcrowding.
