Amman, June 26 (Petra)– Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) announced
on Friday that the Chairperson of its Committee, Yousef Shawarbah,
has been appointed Vice President of the United Cities and Local
Governments (UCLG) Organization for the Middle East and West Asia
region for the 2026–2029 term.
The appointment was made following elections for the organization’s
Presidency Bureau, held on the sidelines of the UCLG Congress and the
World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders, hosted by the Moroccan
city of Tangier.
The elections resulted in the selection of Ugur Ibrahim Altay, Mayor
of Konya Metropolitan Municipality, as President of UCLG for the
2026–2029 term.
The newly elected co-presidents are Bheke Stofile, President of the
South African Local Government Association; Aysen Nikolayev, Head of
the Republic of Sakha; Jan van Zanen, Mayor of The Hague; Cristian
Zamora, Mayor of Cuenca; and Berry Vrbanovic, Mayor of Kitchener.
The new leadership also includes Fatimetou Abdel Malick, President of
the Nouakchott Region, as Chair of UCLG’s Standing Committee on
Gender Equality, while Fatiha El Moudni, Mayor of Rabat, was
appointed Treasurer of the United Cities and Local Governments
Organization for the current term.
