Transport Ministry: 166 locomotive modernization applications in over a month

Amman, July 20 (Petra) – The Transport Ministry said on Monday it
received some 166 locomotive head replacement and modernization
applications in 32 days under a program to modernize 8,313 tractor
units with an operational lifespan of 20 years or more over a
two-year period.

The vehicle modernization scheme began on June 18 upon a cabinet
decision with incentives, where 104 applications were submitted by
individual operators and 62 by company fleets.

It will help renew the freight transport fleet and enhance its
efficiency, reliability, and operational readiness both in the
Kingdom and internationally, according to the Land Transport
Regulatory Commission.

The impact of the decision goes beyond simply replacing old vehicles,
but it also strengthens the operational flexibility of Jordan’s land
transport fleet, reduce breakdowns and maintenance and operating
costs, and enables operators to better respond to the demands of
trade and transport on local and international routes, the commission
said.

The fleet modernization is a key step towards opening regional
markets to Jordanian carriers by providing modern tractor units that
meet regional technical and operational requirements. It will also
enhance the competitiveness of Jordanian transport companies and
their ability to regain their presence on regional transport routes,
said the commission.
