US imposes sweeping sanctions on Iran’s aviation sector

Amman, Sept. 8 (Petra) – The US Department of the Treasury imposed
sanctions on Tuesday on all remaining Iranian commercial airlines,
escalating economic pressure on Tehran.

The department blacklisted 36 entities, including 27 Iranian
passenger airlines and foreign-based companies, accused of supporting
Iran’s aviation network. Officials stated the sector is “routinely
exploited” by the Iranian government to transport weapons, personnel,
and illicit cargo.

The move aims to cripple carriers like Mahan Air, shut down covert
front companies and foreign intermediaries, and block fraudulent
shipping routes used by Tehran to acquire American-origin aircraft
and sensitive technology.

Additionally, the Treasury issued an advisory instructing financial
institutions to identify and report procurement networks linked to
Iran’s aviation industry.
