Macron to Open Strategic Debate on French Nuclear Protection of Europe Paris, 6 Mar (ONA) — French President Emmanuel Macron announced
that he decided to open up a strategic debate on the protection of
Europe by French nuclear deterrent.
“I have decided to open up the strategic debate on the protection of
our allies on the European continent through our nuclear deterrent,”
Macron said in a televised address, while adding that any decision on
nuclear weapons use would remain with the French head of state.
Macron’s move comes in response to a push by likely next German
chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The French President also described Russia as a “threat” to all of
Europe, whether through the Ukrainian conflict, cyberattacks, or
political interference.
He reiterated his country’s commitment to NATO and its partnership
with the United States, saying “In this respect, we remain committed
to NATO and our partnership with the United States of America. But we
must do more. Strengthen our independence in defence and security
matters.”
Later today, European leaders will gather in Brussels for an
extraordinary summit dedicated to defence issues.
Macron noted that EU member states will be able to increase military
