Baku, Jan. 12, 2026 (SUNA) – The first meetings of the Sudan–Azerbaijan Political Consultation Committee were held in Baku on Monday. The Sudanese side was headed by Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Muawiya Osman Khalid, while the Azerbaijani side was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev. The two sides reviewed various aspects of bilateral relations and ways to support and develop them across different fields. They underscored the importance of safeguarding Sudan’s territorial unity and integrity, preserving its independence and sovereignty, and protecting all its national institutions, while categorically rejecting any interference in its internal affairs. The Azerbaijani side expressed appreciation for the steps taken by the Sudanese government to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need, including opening border crossings and cooperating with the United Nations, its specialized agencies, and international partners. For its part, the Sudanese side welcomed the progress achieved in the peace process in the South Caucasus, as well as the initialling of the historic peace agreement between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia in early August 2025, under the auspices of U.S. President Donald Trump. Sudan considered the agreement a new chapter for regional cooperation and integration and reaffirmed its full support for Azerbaijan’s ongoing efforts to reconstruct the Karabakh region and create favourable conditions for the return of Azerbaijani citizens to their homes. Both sides stressed the importance of activating and updating existing joint agreements and protocols in a manner that translates them into clear and effective action programs. They also agreed on the need to convene the joint ministerial committee, with the competent authorities in both countries to determine suitable dates. The meetings were marked by a positive spirit, full mutual understanding, and a shared commitment to strengthening the distinguished relations between the two countries.BH/BH
