Khartoum, Jan. 18, 2026 (SUNA) – Prime Minister Dr. Kamil Idris pledged to mobilize all efforts and resources to restore the National Public Health Laboratory “STAK” to a state surpassing its previous capacity.The statement came during his inspection visit to the laboratory Sunday afternoon, accompanied by the Prime Minister’s Advisor, Nizar Abdullah Mohamed; Minister of Health Dr. Haitham Mohamed; Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers Ali Mohamed Ali; and Director-General of the National Public Health Laboratory “STAK,” Dr. Mubarak Al-Karsani.Dr. Idris and the accompanying delegation assessed the extent of systematic sabotage inflicted on the laboratory by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, including the theft of advanced and sophisticated laboratory equipment.He was briefed on successful efforts to remove debris, mitigate risks of viral and bacterial outbreaks, and preserve biosafety measures.The Prime Minister also received an overview of the laboratory’s critical functions, including epidemiological and pathological diagnostics, water and food safety testing, specialized tests, immunization programme support, and tuberculosis and malaria testing, in addition to its role in research, studies, and training of medical personnel.Dr. Idris directed the accelerated implementation of the rehabilitation and development plan for the laboratory, emphasizing its status as the largest reference laboratory in Africa, recognized by the World Health Organization and other international organizations. He also instructed the Ministry of Finance to provide a power transformer to support the laboratory’s operations.FA/BH
