Miami, June 22 (QNA) – Cape Verde kept their hopes of reaching the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive after securing a 2-2 draw against Uruguay in their Group H second-round match at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Cape Verde opened the scoring in the 21st minute through Kevin Pina, who found the net with a direct free kick. Uruguay responded strongly before halftime, overturning the deficit with goals from Maximiliano Araأ؛jo in the 44th minute and Agustأ­n Cano in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time.
In the second half, Cape Verde restored parity in the 61st minute when Helio Varela capitalized on a defensive error and a misjudged exit by Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to score the equalizer.
The result moved Cape Verde to two points from two draws, having opened its campaign with a goalless draw against Spain. Uruguay now has four points, level with Spain at the top of the group, while Saudi Arabia remains at the bottom with one point.
With one round of group-stage matches remaining, the race for qualification to the knockout stage remains wide open. (QNA)
