Guinea-Bissau Votes on
Constitutional Amendments Strengthening Presidential Powers
Bissau, 30 Aug 2026 (ONA) — Voters
in Guinea-Bissau head to the polls today to cast their ballots in a referendum
on granting new presidential powers, ahead of general elections scheduled for
December, which are expected to return the West African nation to the
democratic path.
Should the new constitution be
approved by the National Transitional Council, it would vest the president with
expanded authority, reduce parliamentary representation, and address a range of
other provisions.
