Moscow, February 26 (QNA) – A powerful earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia Thursday.
The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter was located 176 km southeast of the city of Vilyuchinsk, at a depth of 10 km.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of the possibility of dangerous waves, potentially reaching one meter along some Russian coasts near the epicenter.
The Kamchatka Peninsula experienced five strong earthquakes last year, the most powerful of which was a 7.4 magnitude quake on July 20, 2025, which triggered a four-meter-high tsunami across the Pacific Ocean.
The Kamchatka Peninsula lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of intense seismic and volcanic activity. (QNA)
