Beijing, June 28 (QNA) – China’s National Energy Administration announced that the country’s installed hydropower capacity reached 450 million kilowatts by the end of 2025, an increase of over 40 percent compared to 2015, as part of the ongoing expansion of the clean energy sector.

The administration explained that the total installed renewable energy capacity reached approximately 2.4 billion kilowatts by the end of March 2026, a year-on-year increase of 22 percent, representing 60.4 percent of the country’s total installed electricity generation capacity.

The authority confirmed that the Baihetan Hydroelectric Power Plant, the world’s second largest, is one of China’s most prominent clean energy projects. With an installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, it generates approximately 62.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to meet the needs of about 75 million people.

The authority also projected that electricity consumption in China will increase by about 600 billion kilowatt-hours annually between 2026 and 2030, driven by growing demand from data centers, electric vehicle charging, and industrial sectors. The country’s total installed electricity generation capacity reached 4.01 billion kilowatts by the end of May. (QNA)
