Beijing, June 28 (QNA) – Chinese scientists have developed a high-efficiency material for solar-powered seawater desalination that reduces energy consumption by 45.7% while achieving a record evaporation rate.
The material was developed by a joint research team from the Institute of Process Engineering under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shenzhen University. The findings were published in the journal Advanced Materials, Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday.
According to Xinhua, the technology uses a three-dimensional hollow multi-shell structure that enables the uniform distribution of nanoparticles, improving solar energy absorption and water transport efficiency.
Laboratory tests showed the material achieved a solar absorption rate of 90.2%, maintained a high evaporation rate and delivered stable performance over a one-year testing period.
Researchers also demonstrated the technology in a prototype desalination device that produced about 20 liters of fresh water a day under natural sunlight, enough to meet the daily water needs of around 10 people, according to the agency.
China’s desalination industry has expanded rapidly in recent years and is regarded as a strategic sector to help address water shortages in coastal cities and industrial regions. (QNA)
