Guided-Balloon Drug Smuggling Attempt Foiled on Eastern Border

Amman, Sept. 13 (Petra) — Border Guard units intercepted guided
balloons carrying a large quantity of narcotics across the eastern
border early Sunday, foiling the latest attempt to use the airborne
method for drug smuggling.

The Eastern Military Zone detected the balloons as they crossed the
border and brought them down inside the Kingdom, where their cargo of
narcotics was seized.

The operation was carried out in coordination with military and
security agencies and the Anti-Narcotics Department. The seized drugs
were subsequently referred to the relevant authorities for legal
action.

The Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) said border units continue to
track the methods used by smugglers and take the operational measures
necessary to counter attempts to move narcotics or infiltrate across
the Kingdom’s borders.

The JAF reaffirmed that it would continue to confront cross-border
smuggling and infiltration attempts and adapt its operations to
changing methods used by smugglers.
