Doha, September 19 (QNA) – The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), represented by the Wildlife Development Department, organized an event to restore the “Houtan” meadow in the northern area.

The move was part of MECC’s steadfast efforts to rehabilitate Qatar’s meadows and enhance natural vegetation cover, as well as protect the nation’s biodiversity and terrestrial ecosystems.

The rehabilitation work included planting 300 seedlings of native wild plant species and sowing about 5,000 seeds of species suited to the site’s natural conditions.

The effort is expected to increase vegetation density, support natural regeneration, and improve the overall condition of the meadow, with the participation of several ministry officials and specialists.

Head of the Plant Wildlife Section at the Wildlife Development Department Adel Mohammed Al Yafei said the ministry is forging ahead with the implementation of its field plans and initiatives to rehabilitate meadows and strengthen their vegetation cover.

Planting and seeding efforts are a key part of national efforts to conserve the terrestrial environment and protect biodiversity, Al Yafei underlined, stating that planting native plants and seeding them helps improve natural habitat quality and enhance ecosystem stability.

He noted that selecting plant species adapted to the conditions of each site is a critical factor in ensuring the success of restoration programs and sustaining their results over the long term.

The Ministry places a high priority on meadows as a fundamental component of the nation’s terrestrial environment and a key pillar of environmental balance and wildlife conservation, Al Yafei stressed, pointing out that similar programs will continue to protect natural resources and sustain them.

The event is part of a series of field projects implemented by MECC to sustain natural resources and enhance terrestrial environments across the nation. (QNA)
