Beirut, January 13 (Petra) — Lebanese President Michel Aoun named former Lebanese ambassador to the United Nations, Nawaf Salam, to form the first government of his term.
The decision followed consultations among all 128 members of parliament throughout the day.
President Aoun is expected to officially assign Salam, currently serving at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, as prime minister-designate.
Salam received the support of 85 deputies, while 9 deputies nominated the current prime minister, Najib Mikati. Meanwhile, 33 deputies, including members of Hezbollah and the Amal Movement led by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, abstained from naming a candidate.
Born in 1953, Salam was appointed president of the International Criminal Court in February 2024.
He holds a PhD in political science from the Institute of Political Studies in Paris (1992), a law degree from Harvard Law School and a doctorate in history from Sorbonne University.
