Amman, July 1 (Petra) – Public Security Directorate (PSD) Director
General Major General Obaidullah Ma’ayta said on Wednesday that
correctional and rehabilitation centers are a key pillar of the
criminal justice system, given their reformative role in rebuilding
an inmate’s character and enabling their reintegration into society.
The PSD Chief spoke during a visit to the Correctional and
Rehabilitation Centers Administration, where he met with directors,
pledging to constantly support the administration’s centers with
qualified personnel, technical and logistical equipment, and modern
technologies.
Al-Ma’ayta ordered more services for inmates, including a money
transfer service with a fixed monthly limit allowing families to
deposit funds on their behalf without the need for manual deposits.
He also directed an expansion of visitation services and
communication between inmates and their families through four
newly-installed video conferencing stations across the Kingdom’s
governorates, as a first phase.
The stations will enable families to communicate with inmates
remotely, without the need to travel to the correctional and
rehabilitation centers.
He called for conducting studies of the correctional system and
building upon successful initiatives, such as the treatment of
addicts within the centers. He also said efforts are underway to
study and find solutions to overcrowding and complete expansion
projects at correctional centers.
The PSD Head was briefed on key development and reform plans and
programs, efforts made to improve services to inmates, as well as
strengthening partnerships with national and international
institutions to develop correctional and rehabilitation work.
