Khartoum, July 3, 2026 (SUNA) — Qatar Charity has announced that its visiting medical team carried out 60 pediatric cardiac catheterization and open-heart surgeries to correct congenital heart defects during a specialized medical camp at the Madani Heart Center, funded by donors in Qatar. Dr. Abdelmajid Al-Hamidi, expert in international development programmes at Qatar Charity, said the procedures were conducted as part of the initiative, which targeted children suffering from complex heart conditions. Consultant interventional cardiologist and member of the visiting medical team, Dr. Mustafa Al-Mihya, said a large number of catheterization procedures were performed, adding that the children’s conditions are now stable. Pediatric specialist Dr. Mohamed Al-Assar stated that most of the cases were life-saving interventions, with recovery rates ranging between 90% and 100%. The medical camp was inaugurated on Sunday by Minister of Health Dr. Haitham Mohammed Ibrahim, Al-Gezira State Wali Al-Tahir Ibrahim Al-Khair, and Chargé d’Affaires of the State of Qatar Embassy Abdullah Rashid Al-Khater at the Madani Heart Center, in the presence of senior health officials and families of the children. They praised Qatar Charity’s efforts in alleviating the suffering of children by providing free surgical and medical services, which have had a significant impact on families affected by difficult economic conditions caused by war and displacement. The team carried out the procedures on patients from various Sudanese states, in an initiative widely welcomed for its humanitarian impact and support from Qatari donors. Qatar Charity’s medical interventions in Sudan are part of an integrated health programme that includes cochlear implant surgeries for children at Doha Hospital in Khartoum and a nationwide blindness prevention programme benefiting more than 6,000 patients across Red Sea, Al-Gezira, Sennar, and River Nile states. The organization also continues to support the health sector through hospital rehabilitation, equipment provision, and life-saving medicines.BH/BH
