Doha, July 02 (QNA) – Qatar’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has called on the public to reduce the use of plastic bags and ensure their proper disposal, warning of their environmental impact on beaches, deserts, and marine areas.
In a statement marking the International Plastic Bag Free Day, observed annually on July 3, the ministry urged residents and visitors to coastal and natural areas to collect plastic waste and dispose of it in designated bins rather than leaving it scattered in the environment.
It warned that plastic bags left on beaches or in natural reserves can be carried by wind or tides over long distances, posing risks to wildlife and marine life. The ministry said reducing plastic use should go beyond limiting consumption at the point of sale to preventing its release into natural ecosystems.
Dr Farhoud Al Hajri, Director of the Public Relations and Communications Department at the ministry, said the awareness day was an opportunity to reinforce responsible use of single-use products and encourage reusable alternatives, stressing that prevention is more effective than dealing with waste after it has spread.
He called for cooperation between individuals, retailers and organizers of outdoor and marine activities, urging people to carry reusable bags, collect their waste and dispose of it properly, in order to protect the environment and biodiversity. (QNA)
