Amman, July 28 (Petra) – Stargazers and astrophotographers across
Jordan and around the world are polishing their equipment ahead of
Wednesday evening, when July’s midsummer full moon officially reaches
its peak.

According to the Jordanian Astronomical Society, the lunar peak will
occur at 5:34 p.m. Jordan time, with the moon rising near sunset to
remain visible all night long. The moon will be positioned
approximately 402,000 kilometers away from Earth, appearing against
the backdrop of Capricornus. Despite its distance, the society
confirmed the event does not qualify as a micromoon.

President of the Jordanian Astronomical Society, Ammar Sakaji, noted
that the full moon provides ideal viewing opportunities for amateur
astronomers and astrophotographers, especially during moonrise and
moonset when it sits low on the horizon. However, he pointed out that
the moon’s intense brightness will wash out faint deep-sky objects
like distant galaxies and nebulae, making nights closer to the new
moon better suited for those specific observations.

Known in various global cultures as the “Buck Moon,” the midsummer
full moon also holds a special place in Arab heritage. Traditionally,
it was referred to as “Badr al-Najir,” a poetic nod to the peak heat
of the summer season.
