Amman, June 28 (Petra) — Jordan’s national football team added
another milestone to its historic debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup
after Musa Taamari scored against reigning champions Argentina,
making Jordan the only team to find the net against the South
American side during the group stage of the tournament.

Taamari’s goal came in Sunday’s Group J finale and highlighted the
progress of Jordanian football, despite Argentina securing a 3-1
victory. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, had kept clean sheets in its
opening two matches against Algeria and Austria before conceding its
first goal of the group stage to Jordan.

The achievement drew widespread attention from international media,
which described Jordan’s performance as an impressive showing in the
country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance. Reports also praised
the team’s competitiveness against higher-ranked opponents despite
its elimination before the knockout stage.

Jordan also became the only debutant nation at the tournament to
score in all three group-stage matches. Ali Alwan opened the team’s
scoring against Austria, Nizar Rashdan found the net against Algeria,
and Taamari completed the tally with his goal against Argentina.

The tournament also featured several notable individual performances
by Jordanian players. Alwan ranked among the leading players in
shooting statistics during the group stage, while defender Abdullah
Nassib was among the top performers in interceptions in the opening
match. Nour Eddin Rawabdeh led the tournament in distance covered
over the first two matches, and Muhannad Abu Taha ranked among the
leaders in ball recoveries ahead of the final group-stage fixture.

Former national team coach and player Osama Qassem told the Jordan
News Agency (Petra) that scoring against the reigning world champions
demonstrates Jordan’s ability to compete at the highest level. He
said Taamari’s goal reflects the technical quality and confidence of
Jordanian players.

Former national team player Qusai Abu Alia said Nashama produced
commendable performances throughout the tournament and achieved
notable statistics despite facing some of the world’s strongest
teams. He described the goal against Argentina as a significant
accomplishment that reflects the development of Jordanian football.

Sports journalist Yahya Qutaishat said Taamari’s goal attracted
international attention as the only goal Argentina conceded during
the group stage. He added that Jordan’s World Cup debut left a
positive impression despite the team’s exit from the tournament.

Jordanians celebrated Taamari’s goal and expressed pride in the
Nashama’s performance during the World Cup, while looking ahead to
the team’s next major challenge at the AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia
next year.
