Cairo, March 08 (QNA) – Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, has stressed that the decisions rendered by the Extraordinary Session of the Arab League Council at the Ministerial Level, which was convened virtually today over the Iranian assaults on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of some Arab nations, are quite consequential.

The prime step to contain the crisis entails the immediate cessation of Iranian assaults on Arab nations as the fundamental objective of this extraordinary session, Zaki highlighted to Qatar News Agency (QNA).

Zaki pointed out that the current situation is quite tough, as the trajectory of developments indicates that the Arab nations are pivoting toward laying out the issue before the UN Security Council for further follow-up on the global stage.

He called on the Iranian leadership to immediately cease these assaults, emphasizing that overcoming this current situation requires judiciousness and restraint from Iranian leaders.

Such attacks portend a situation in which neighborly relations between Iran and Arab states may fall into a predicament that could last for years, Zaki warned, before adding that the current crisis is quite difficult and unprecedented as Iran attacks the neighboring Arab nations, compromising good neighborliness, breaching international law as well as the Charter of the United Nations, and imperiling the region’s stability.

The Assistant Secretary-General stressed that the Arab League pushes back on these antics and condemns them. He recalled that these assaults came while many Arab nations, including the State of Qatar, Oman, and Egypt, had been undertaking genuine efforts to protect Iran and the region from the scourges of war amid the ongoing tensions between Iran on one side and the United States and Israel on the other.

Zaki pointed out that these efforts were intended to safeguard regional stability, expressing his regret over targeting the State of Qatar, Oman, and many Arab nations by the Iranian side, despite the diligent diplomatic efforts these nations were undertaking to maintain security and stability in the region under unacceptable pretenses.

He hoped that these diplomatic endeavors would continue to help exit from the current crisis.

For his part, HE Official Spokesman for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ambassador Jamal Rushdi, told QNA that this session represents a watershed event in terms of the Arab stance, underscoring a unified voice from Arab nations which stand united in condemning the Iranian assaults that targeted the territories of many Arab nations.

  The Arab nations reject the Iranian belligerent antics, which fall under a reckless policy that would expose the region’s security and stability to grave risks, Rushdi cautioned.

Rushdi elaborated that the session showcased full solidarity from Arab nations and the sisterly countries that came under these attacks, with the Arab stances concurring in the criticality of further action at more than one level within the international community, foremost of which is to call on the UN Security Council to ramp up essential pressures to effectively and immediately halt these attacks.

Any attack that targets Arab nations is utterly reprehensible and condemned and can never be justified under any pretext, Rushdi noted, emphasizing that these bellicose policies help increase Iran’s isolation at a time it needs to forge communication bridges with its Arab periphery.

Rushdi recalled that attacks on Qatar and other nations like Oman had been mounted despite the intensive efforts marshaled by them alongside Egypt, with genuine intention, throughout the past weeks to prevent escalation in the region and reach either a settlement or diplomatic solution that protects the region, including Iran and its people, from the risks of plunging into wider confrontation.

He suggested that these attacks implicate the Iranian side in substantial miscalculations and have caused significant confusion in perception and an inability to distinguish clearly, stressing that such an aggressive policy only serves to further isolate Iran at a time when it needs to forge bridges with the Arab region.
