New York, Sept. 8 (Petra) — The 81st session of the United Nations
General Assembly opened on Tuesday, launching a year-long term under
the presidency of Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, UN Secretary-General António
Guterres stated that rebuilding trust in the multilateral system is
the defining challenge of the current era, welcoming the theme chosen
by Rahman: “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United
Nations that delivers for all.”

“In these turbulent times, the global system for problem-solving is
more vital than ever, as we face conflicts, divisions, and the threat
of nuclear escalation, while enduring persistent poverty, inequality,
and worsening climate chaos,” Guterres said.

He warned that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence
hold great promise but also carry serious risks without sound
governance and transparency regarding their environmental footprint.
He added that displacement figures are approaching record levels
while human suffering deepens amid severe cuts to aid and development
funding.

Guterres noted that multilateral institutions, from the UN Security
Council to the international financial architecture, face immense
pressure to adapt to current demands. He stressed that international
law and human rights the core of the organization are frequently
violated without accountability.

“Geopolitical uncertainty and a lack of trust continue to impede the
effective solutions we need and erode people’s faith in global
cooperation,” Guterres said. “As I join you in opening this General
Assembly session for the final time as Secretary-General, I am filled
with great hope because of the work done here.”
