Water minister urges Jordan’s dam readiness for next winter

Amman, Sep. 3 (Petra) – Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abu
Saud, on Thursday received the report of the National Dam Safety
Committee after its visits to all dam sites nationwide.

The visits aimed to assess the dams’ readiness for the upcoming
2026-2027 rainy season and their capacity to handle the expected
water flow.

Abu Saud urged all water sector employees to act “responsibly and
professionally” in implementing all plans designed to address any
emergencies or flooding during the upcoming rainy season.

He also called for ensuring readiness of the ministry’s operations
and control rooms.

During a tour that featured several water facilities and
hydroelectric power stations, Abu Saud reviewed efforts made by
Jordan Valley Authority (JVA)’s staff to complete “necessary”
maintenance and preparations, ensure safety of all facilities, and
clean waterways.

As for their goals, the minister said these steps aim to “optimize”
benefits from the rainy seasons countrywide, given the vital
importance of these facilities.

He said this effort concides with national initiatives to expand
water harvesting programs, provide water for all uses, and ensure
food security, in line with the Economic Modernization Vision and the
2023-2040 Water Strategy.
