Amman, May 24 (Petra) — The Government of Japan has allocated a
financial grant of US$250,000 to support the United Nations
Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in maintaining water, sanitation, and
hygiene services for Syrian refugees in Jordan.

The project, set to run from 2026 to 2027, aims to ensure the
continued provision of safe drinking water to refugee families in
Zaatari Camp, helping them meet essential daily needs amid increasing
seasonal demand and population fluctuations.

In a statement issued on Sunday, UNICEF said the initiative also
includes a vocational and technical training component for 50 Syrian
refugees in plumbing and environmental health. The program is
designed to strengthen community resilience and provide participants
with practical skills that can enhance future livelihood
opportunities, including potential return to Syria.

UNICEF Representative in Jordan Marc Rubin stressed that access to
clean water and safe sanitation services is vital for safeguarding
the health and dignity of children and families. He expressed
appreciation for Japan’s continued support and partnership in
assisting vulnerable communities in the Kingdom.

Japanese Ambassador to Jordan Hideki Asari reaffirmed Japan’s
recognition of Jordan’s key role in promoting regional stability,
noting continued Japanese support for the Kingdom’s hosting of
approximately 400,000 Syrian refugees.

He added that the funding aims to ensure uninterrupted access to
essential life-saving services for refugees in camps, while
preserving their health and dignity.

Japan remains a long-standing partner of UNICEF globally and in
Jordan. This contribution will help meet essential funding needs to
maintain water and sanitation services for around 49,000 refugees in
Zaatari Camp.

UNICEF continues to work closely with the Jordanian government and
partners to ensure sustainable and equitable access to basic services
for refugees and vulnerable host communities across the country.
