Jordan’s UN envoy announces international humanitarian law meeting in Amman

New York, May 20 (Petra) – Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the
UN, Ambassador Walid Obeidat, on Wednesday announced that Amman will
host an international meeting on December 7, 2026, focused on
strengthening political commitment to international humanitarian law.

Obeidat made the announcement during a statement delivered before the
UN Security Council on behalf of the founding members of the Global
Initiative to Mobilise Political Commitment to International
Humanitarian Law: Jordan, Brazil, China, France, Kazakhstan and South
Africa.

The statement was delivered during the Security Council’s open debate
on the “Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict,” attended by
dozens of ambassadors accredited to the UN.

Obeidat discussed the importance of the upcoming meeting and its
timing amid growing international concern over the protection of
civilians in conflict zones.
