Amman, July 21 (Petra) – A planned joint industrial complex between
the Arab Potash Company (APC) and Jordan Phosphate Mines Company
(JPMC) could boost export value, diversify manufacturing operations,
and elevate Jordan’s position in global chemical supply chains,
acccording to a new Jordan Strategy Forum (JSF) paper.
On its feasibility, the paper highlights the venture’s future impact
on expanding output of “high-value” chemical products and
fertilizers, including purified phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid,
monoammonium phosphate (MAP), monopotassium phosphate (MKP), and
compound fertilizers.
Worldwide demand for these chemical products reached USD21 billion in
2025, following a decade of 5.8% average annual growth. Global
imports are led by India at 13.8% and Brazil at 11.1%, followed by
the US, Canada, and Australia.
Exports remains concentrated among a few nations, led by China,
Morocco, the US, and Russia. Jordan currently holds a 4% share of
global exports in these goods, valued at USD853.7 million.
However, 92% of Jordan’s shipments currently go to India. The JSF
stressed the urgent need to diversify export destinations to reduce
market reliance risks and build economic resilience.
International Trade Centre (ITC) data shows uncaptured global export
opportunities for these goods total USD13 billion. Under current
capacities, Jordan has nearly USD500 million in untapped export
potential, primarily in the Netherlands, the US, Brazil, Canada, and
India.
Meanwhile, JSF estimates indicate the new complex will “gradually”
double Jordan’s export potential from USD500 million to nearly USD1
billion. This increase equals roughly 7.3% of the Kingdom’s current
total exports and could drive an additional 1.4% in annual export
growth over the coming years.
The project could add 5 to 7 new products to Jordan’s export
portfolio through industrial integration, according to Harvard
University’s Atlas of Economic Complexity data. Producing these
medium-to-high complexity goods will enhance the technical
sophistication of Jordanian exports and elevate the country’s ranking
on the Economic Complexity Index (ECI).
Concluding its paper, the JSF said the complex will help shift Jordan
from exporting raw materials to manufacturing high-value specialized
products, boosting job creation and integrating the Kingdom into
global chemical and fertilizer supply chains.
