Prime Minister meets UN High Commissioner for Refugees and reviews Sudan’s Peace Initiative

Geneva, 6-2-2026 (SUNA) – As part of his official visit to Geneva, Prime Minister, Professor Kamil Idris, met today, Friday, with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Bahram Salih, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the Government of Sudan and the UNHCR amid unprecedented humanitarian challenges facing the country. The Prime Minister expressed Sudan’s appreciation for the UNHCR’s pivotal role in responding to the needs of Sudanese refugees in neighbouring countries and internally displaced persons (IDPs), as well as its efforts in mobilizing international support for the regional response plan.Dr. Idris also reviewed the current humanitarian situation, noting positive developments, including the increasing rates of voluntary return to safe states following the restoration of services, particularly in Khartoum, Al-Gezira, Sennar, and White Nile States, despite the systematic destruction carried out by the rebel militias targeting infrastructure.The Prime Minister provided an update on the Sudanese Government’s “Hope for Peace” initiative submitted to the UN Security Council, highlighting it as a comprehensive national framework for ending the war and addressing the root causes of the crisis. He emphasized the government’s aspiration for the UNHCR to play a key role in protection, voluntary return, reintegration, and linking humanitarian work with early recovery and reconstruction efforts.For his part, the High Commissioner reaffirmed UNHCR’s commitment to continue supporting Sudan, coordinating closely with the Sudanese government, and working with international partners to alleviate the suffering of refugees and displaced persons and promote sustainable solutions. He noted that the UNHCR office has made significant arrangements to resume operations in Khartoum following the stabilization of the situation and the return of essential services.At the conclusion of the meeting, the Prime Minister renewed the Government of Sudan’s commitment to facilitating the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance and expressed anticipation for continued dialogue and cooperation with the UNHCR in the best interests of Sudan and its people.
