Mogadishu, February 22 (QNA) – The Somali army launched a military operation today targeting Al Shabaab elements entrenched in the Hawadley area of the Middle Shabelle region in the country’s southeast.
The Somali National News Agency (SONNA) quoted military sources stating that the primary objective of the operation is to ensure stability in the region and destroy sites and caves used as hideouts by militants. The sources noted that army forces are conducting thorough house-to-house searches to ensure they are cleared of any group elements, while tightening security measures on main roads to guarantee the safety of civilians and vehicles.
For over a year, the Somali army has been intensifying its military operations against Al Shabaab. In recent months, it has successfully regained control of several areas previously held by the group, particularly in the central parts of the country. (QNA)
