Sudan’s UN-Geneva Envoy Presents Peace Plan to UN Refugee Chief, Reviews Humanitarian Crisis

Geneva, Jan. 21, 2025 (SUNA) – Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, met with the newly appointed United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Burham Salih.During the meeting, which marked the start of High Commissioner Salih’s term, Ambassador Hamid conveyed the Sudanese government’s congratulations and presented a detailed account of the severe humanitarian situation affecting Sudanese refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). He attributed the widespread displacement to the systematic targeting of civilians and infrastructure by rebel militias.The Permanent Representative also outlined Sudan’s peace initiative, highlighting its positive reception by international and regional bodies, and called for coordinated support from humanitarian organizations.For his part, High Commissioner Salih expressed his deep personal concern for the suffering of Sudanese refugees, particularly women and children, drawing on his recent visits to Chad and Kenya. He reaffirmed UNHCR’s commitment to prioritizing Sudan and confirmed plans for an upcoming visit to the country.
